Poppies are the state flower of California. The scientific name is Eschscholzia californiaca, California poppy, Californian poppy, golden poppy, California sunlight, and cup of gold. The California Poppy is usually a light orange to bright orange color.
As a native of California, I have only heard of the California Poppy and Californian poppy. They are a drought tolerant flower, which could be why you can see them all they way down to Mexico.
California poppies grow everywhere in California spring, summer, and fall. They have a very bluish pale green for leaves, with very odd shapes. This type or color of greens is called glaucous which is a waxy white film over the plant. And you can wipe it away.
This year in my flower garden some volunteer poppies came up. Right in the edge of the rock garden. I was so pleased. Then, a pink with white poppy began to bloom. It is called “rose chiffon” poppy.
Then a pale yellow colored poppy popped up, this is called lemon bush poppy!
And then to my surprise, another color popped up!
Bright red! This one is called, Dali poppy.
All of these beautiful poppies in the same spot in my garden! I have only seen the pale yellow and orange poppies, never pink or red! What a lovely surprise!
These poppies are magnificent! They are bright orange color, with hints of red and a very dark purple black to them. These particular flowers have been growing at the Highland Art Center in Weaverville, California, for many years. I haven’t seen any as large anywhere else in California, but I am sure they are out there!
These poppies usually bloom in May, or late May, so you have time to make it there this year. If you visit Weaverville, California, and enjoy art, you should stop in at the Highland Art Center. They are located on Main street. If you go in the spring, spring you will also see these wonderful flowers.
Also known as Papaver oreientale, these flowers are from the Caucuses of Turkey and northern Iran. The are similar to ranuncula flowers, which are wonderful also. I will have to go by the Art Center and see what they are looking like this year!
These bright orange and eggplant blackish color poppies are just gorgeous! They are really big too! They are at the Highland Art Center in Weaverville, California. Obviously, they have been growing for a very long time.
