I love my Grandmother’s Meyer Lemon tree in Healdsburg, California.  It is huge, and old, but not super tall.  So you can pick lots of lemons.  It produces so many lemons also, and sometimes, all year round. Unfortunately, my grandmothers house is a few hours away, and I sometimes need to buy lemons locally.

I love the local health food store, Orchard Nutrition. They always have some local, Shasta county, fruit and/or vegetables, for their customers. In the winter/spring, they often have fresh Meyer lemons and at a very reasonable price. Sold by the pound not per fruit.  They have them right now I was just in there the other day.

Persimmons a Winter Fruit

Apparently there are two types of persimmons the kind you cook with and the kind that you eat like a fruit.  They are also called astringent and non astringent, the latter are the kind that you can eat.  They are in between and an apple and a pear, and but with more texture similar to the tomato. Below are pictures that I took of some persimmons at my Aunt’s house over Thanksgiving. 
The astringent type has high levels of tannins.  You can taste what tannin is if you peel a dark grape and eat the skin alone.  That is the taste of tannin, which is also in wines.  So when there is high tannin the taste is more bitter, and therefore the astringent persimmons need to be very very ripe, or you just cook and bake with them.   Persimmons are a beautiful color, you can find the persimmon trees full of fruit in the winter.

How to Peel a Pomegranate

Pomegranates used to be my favorite fruit as a child. I still do enjoy eating them very much. My aunt says to peel them underwater, it is less messy that way. Recently I read that the seeds of pomegranates have great nutritional value. Seriously, we should all go buy some today!

The pomegranate is from ancient times, and was originally from the area of what is known as Iran and Iraq.  Today the pomegranate tree is all over the world from the middle east, to India, to the Mediterranean, Africa, in the U.S, California and Arizona.  One of my favorite dishes is a middle eastern pomegranate chicken.  Obviously, they have been using this fruit for a long time!
